We had said we were finished with wineries, but then when our travels took us near St. Ambrose Cellars, we couldn’t help ourselves.  Wine and mead, we couldn’t resist.

We had seen advertisements for St. Ambrose and after our fantastic experience at the Acoustic Mead Taproom, we couldn’t wait to see what they had to offer.  There was so much to choose from — Red and white wines, still meads, ciders, and draft meads.

Bushmaster gravitated toward the white wines:

  • 2011 Marsanne-Viognier
  • 2014 Vin Gris
  • 2014 Riesling Reserve
  • Secret Beach – a white blend of Riesling and Vignoles
  • 2014 Late Harvest Riesling
  • 2011 Late Harvest Vignoles

Aary and I focused on the meads:

  • Oak Barrel Reserve
  • Star Thistle Ambrosia
  • Tupelo Ambrosia
  • Ambrosia
  • Royal Reserve
  • Cherry Amore
  • Blueberry Bramble Cider
  • The Shire Cider
  • Wild Ginger
  • Razz!
  • Black Madonna
  • X.R. Cyser
  • Evil Twins

Bushmaster enjoyed his samples.  The Late Harvest wines were very similar to ice wines. Aary and I were blown away by the meads and their unusual flavors.  Not surprisingly, the Oak Barrel Reserve was at the top of my list.  Aary’s favorites included the Tupelo Ambrosia, Blueberry Bramble, and X.R. Cyser.  However, our overall favorite was the Wild Ginger and we purchased several bottles.

St. Ambrose Cellars was a fun stop with some new experiences for all of us.  It was a nice break during our drive and yet another outstanding Michigan experience.  If a trip to their tasting room is impractical, St. Ambrose Cellar meads and wines are available at a number of retail locations throughout Michigan.
